PEAK SEASON SHIPMENTS BOOST LONG BEACHÆS SEPTEMBER VOLUME

The Port of Long Beach said peak-season imports from Asia offset declines in exports, giving the port a slight increase in overall container cargo volume for September.

The port handled 388,379 TEUs, up 0.2 percent over September 2000. The total was the second best of the year, behind the 405,862 TEUs handled in August.

Imports rose 5.4 percent to 220,204 TEUs, while exports fell 5.1 percent to 76,724 TEUs, the port said.

The August-through-October period is historically the port's busiest time, as retailers import Asian-made goods, such as clothing, toys, shoes and household merchandise for the end-of-the-year holiday season.
