BIMCO signs anti-drug smuggling agreement with Cypriot customs
The Baltic and International Maritime Council of shipowners has signed an anti-drug smuggling cooperation agreement with the Cypriot Department of Customs & Excise.
BIMCO said that the rising frequency in the movement of illicit drugs to North America and Europe, and the increased attention given to maritime security, make agreements between shipowners and customs authorities essential.
When drugs are found on board ships, shipowners that are covered by such agreements can avoid delays and, in some cases, fines, BIMCO said. More than 60 percent of the organization’s owner members are participating with one or more anti-drug smuggling programs.
BIMCO has previously established similar agreements with the customs administrations of Canada, United States and 12 European countries.
