Sydney to phase out commercial harbor

The government of New South Wales in Australia has decided to phase out the commercial harbor in Sydney in favor of housing, parks and other development projects, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The port will cease to function in 2012, when the last of three stevedoring leases expire. Stevedore companies are being encouraged to move their operations to Port Kembla, Botany Bay and Newcastle.

Unions claim the move is a capitulation to real estate interests and community groups opposed to a noisy industrial harbor.
