CUSTOMS COMMISSIONER NOMINEE GOES BEFORE SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE

The U.S. Senate Finance Committee will hear testimony today regarding President Bush’s nomination of Robert C. Bonner to Customs commissioner.

Bonner, whose nomination was sent to the Senate on June 26, formerly served as U.S. attorney for the Central District of California during the Reagan Administration and as judge to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California under former President Bush. From 1990 to 1993, Bonner served as administrator for the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Once sworn into office, Bonner would replace former Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly.

Customs has expressed confidence in Bonner’s ability to take charge of the agency.

“We look forward to Mr. Bonner’s arrival at the Customs Service,” said Charles W. Winwood, acting commissioner at Customs, at a recent hearing before the House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee. “He will be a tremendous asset to the federal government.”

Other nominations before the Senate Finance Committee today are Rosario Marin to be treasurer of the United States; Jon Huntsman Jr. to be deputy U.S. Trade Representative; Alex Azar II to be general counsel of the Health and Human Services Department; and Janet Rehnquist to be inspector general of the Health and Human Services Department.
