Butcher, Kuo to Receive 2009 Connie Awards

   The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) will present this year's Connie Awards to James E. Butcher, chairman of H'egh Autoliners Inc., and to Capt. Shiuan Y. Kuo, vice group chairman at Evergreen Group at a luncheon on Dec. 7 in Newark, N.J.

   Butcher has worked at H'egh Autoliners since the Oslo, Norway-based carrier opened its U.S. subsidiary in 1973, serving as president from 1999 until April 2009 when he became chairman. He also serves as chairman of other H'egh companies Alliance Navigation LLC and Port Dolphin Energy LLC. H'egh Autoliners specializes in the transport of vehicles and other rolling cargoes.

   Kuo joined Evergreen in September 1970, just two years after the company was founded. He served aboard several of the company’s vessels before coming ashore in 1974. In mid-1975, he was transferred to the company’s New York office and was instrumental in establishing Evergreen’s initial full container service between the Far East and the East Coast of North America.

   After a stint in London to oversee the launch of the company’s North European service, he returned to the United States in 1980 as president of Evergreen America Corp. and stayed on the U.S. East Coast until 1998, is last two-and-a-half years as chairman of Evergreen America Corp. In 1998, Kuo returned to Taipei as chairman of Evergreen Sky Catering Corp., which was followed by his appointment as chairman of Evergreen Marine Corp. (Taiwan) Ltd. He returned to the United States in 2004. He was named vice group chairman in June 2002 with responsibilities for activities in the Americas, from the company’s U.S. headquarters in Jersey City, N.J. At that time, he was also chairman of Evergreen Marine Corp. (Taiwan) Ltd.

   CII will also present scholarships to midshipmen at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy underwritten by Crowley Maritime and CII, as well as a scholarship to a cadet at SUNY Maritime Academy underwritten by New York Container Terminal and a scholarship for a student studying logistics underwritten by BSY Associates.
