U.S. Customs to importers: hold off filing AGOA acceleration claims

The U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection has urged importers of apparel and textile products not to make claims for preferential tariff treatment under the new African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Acceleration Act of 2004.

Although President Bush signed the AGOA Acceleration Act into law July 13, Customs said all claims should be deferred 'until the presidential proclamation has been issued and implementation instructions published by this office.'

Once the proclamation has been made, Customs and Border Protection will release the instructions. For more information, call Susan Thomas at (202) 344-3719.
