Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is 40 years old
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which connects Virginia Beach and Norfolk with Virginia’s Eastern Shore, will mark its 40th anniversary Thursday.
The 23-mile-long bridge-tunnel, which crosses the open waters of the lower Chesapeake Bay for 17.6 miles, comprises two tunnels. The first, under Thimble Shoals Channel, allows the Navy’s Atlantic Fleet to pass over the highway. The second tunnel lies under a shipping channel for Maryland ports.
Toll collectors will give a gold bookmark to all users of the bridge-tunnel Thursday.
