MarAd approves sale of U.S.-flag vessels
The U.S. Maritime Administration has approved the scrapping of a U.S.-flag containership and the transfer and reflagging request for a U.S.-flag tank barge.
Horizon Lines, based in Charlotte, N.C., will sell its containership “Horizon Mayaguez” to Eckhardt Marine of Germany for scrapping in China. The 18,850-deadweight-ton vessel was built at Port Arthur, Texas, in 1969.
K-Sea Operating Partners of Staten Island, N.Y., will sell and transfer to Canadian flag its tank barge “KTC-135” to McKeil Work Boats Ltd., a Canada-based operator. The tank barge was constructed in New Orleans in 1982.
Under section 9 of the 1916 Shipping Act, MarAd must approve all sales, scrappings, and flag transfers of U.S.-flag vessels.
