Kiribati joins IMO

   The Republic of Kiribati has become the 163rd member of the International Maritime Organization.

   Kiribati comprises 33 coral atolls in the Pacific with a population of 98,549. The republic’s capital, Tarawa, is halfway between Hawaii and Australia.

   The IMO is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety of shipping and the prevention of pollution by ships.
