FCC boosts RFID capability for container applications

The Federal Communications Commission published a final rule increasing the maximum permitted strength and transmission duration for radio frequency identification systems used to track the contents of commercial shipping containers in commercial and industrial areas to allow more rapid and reliable data transmissions.

The rule finalizes a mid-April determination by the commission to allow increased signal strength for RFID systems in the 433 megahertz range to help businesses improve the flow of their supplies and determine whether tampering of the contents has occurred.
