IANA: INTERMODAL TRAFFIC SOLID DESPITE SLOWDOWN

   Intermodal traffic carried by North America's largest six railroads in the second quarter this year was nearly level with last year, the Intermodal Association of North America said in its most recent “Rail Intermodal Traffic Report.”'

   For the second consecutive quarter, domestic container traffic exceeded trailer traffic. Traffic in international quarters was up 3.1 percent, while domestic container traffic showed a slight decrease.

   Regionally, the Midwest-Southeast corridor produced 11 percent growth due to a strong performance in container traffic, while the South Central-Southwest corridor showed 6.3 percent growth, IANA said.

   In other news, Norfolk Southern is now providing rail service to the Mason Intermodal Container Transfer Facility at the port of Savannah, Ga. Norfolk Southern has also recently opened its new Cleveland terminal in Maple Heights, Ohio, to handle international traffic. Canadian Pacific has announced plans to expand and upgrade intermodal facilities in Toronto, Chicago, and Calgary.
