CARRIERS ADD CONGESTION SURCHARGE FOR CHENNAI

Shipping lines in the Europe/Indian Subcontinent trade are introducing a congestion surcharge in Chennai, the southern Indian port.

“As a result of severe congestion at the port of Chennai, the Chennai feeder operators serving the Chennai trade have announced the immediate introduction of a $75 per TEU congestion surcharge on all laden container movements between Chennai/Colombo, Chennai/Malaysia and Chennai/Singapore,” a spokesman for the India Pakistan Bangladesh Ceylon Conferences said.

The carriers said that they have no alternative other than to pass this charge directly onto their customers.
