Air France to switch 747-400s to freighter configuration

Air France to switch 747-400s to freighter configuration

Boeing said it will convert three 747-400 airplanes into freighters for Air France.

Six other airlines have signed up for conversions under 747-400 Special Freighter program that Boeing began in January 2004, but Air France is the first to convert former Combi planes.

Combinations planes have a large side-cargo door and the ability to add cargo on the main deck behind passengers, as needed.

Boeing is scheduled to deliver its first converted plane in June 2007.

Air France will phase out its 747-200 freighters as the 747-400s enter service.

Air France also said last week it plans to buy five 777 freighters, with an option for three more planes. The 777 freighter is a new model Boeing is launching later this year.
