Port of London Authority throughput up 1% in 2005
The Port of London Authority said throughput at its port facilities rose 1 percent in 2005 to 53.8 million tons.
The authority also urged the British government to give final approval to the proposed London Gateway port. Construction of the '1.5 billion ($2.63 billion) port and business park projects, located close to London in Thurrock, Essex, is projected to have an annual capacity of 3.5 million TEUs.
“We are confident London Gateway will be a major part of the future of the Port of London,” said Simon Sherrard, chairman of the Port of London Authority. “It is now nearly two years since the public inquiry and the government has yet to give its final approval. It is common ground that an increase in container terminal capacity is essential to the future economic health of this nation and we therefore look forward to consent being given very shortly indeed.”
