U.S. awards $250,000 grant for Romanian rail safety study
The U.S. Trade and Development Agency has awarded the Romanian government a $250,000 grant to help fund a study to improve rail safety and capacity.
Romania’s Ministry of Transport, Construction and Tourism will conduct the study with help from the Washington-based Seneca Group. The goal is to implement a new “positive train control” (PTC) system over the country’s existing rail operation.
“If implemented, the PTC system will increase the capacity of Romanian rail lines by allowing more trains to travel on the track,” the USTDA said. “The proposed system will also improve safety by pinpointing the location of each train on the track in real time.”
In addition, the installation of this system would mark the first use of a U.S.-style train control system in Europe, the agency said.
