Canada Customs installs gamma-ray scanner at Saint John port
The Canada Customs and Revenue Agency said it has installed a mobile “vehicle and cargo inspection systems” (VACIS) unit at the port of Saint John, in the province of New Brunswick.
The truck-mounted gamma-ray scanner, which cost Can$2 million ($1.5 million), is one of 11 units purchased by the CCRA after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
Similar units are now on site and operational in the ports of Halifax and Vancouver, a CCRA spokesperson told Shippers’ News Wire.
The Customs and Revenue Agency has also delivered contraband detection technology costing $45 million to principal Canadian ports.
