USTR considers trade impact of new EU entrants

The U.S. Trade Representative requests comments concerning the possible impact on trade in goods and services with the increasing number of countries joining the European Union.

In May, the new EU entrants will include Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus and Malta.

Accession to the EU will require these countries to adopt a set of common internal tariffs for goods imported from third countries, adopt or alter tariff rate quotas on various products to bring them in line with EU tariff rate quotas, and harmonize their regulatory requirements for imports with EU regulations.

USTR will take comments from the industry through Oct. 16. For more information, contact Gloria Blue at (202) 395-3475.
