GPA ISSUES PLAN TO EASE CONGESTION
The George Ports Authority in Savannah has implemented a multi-step concept to handle a 60 percent increase in container volume without increasing congestion around that city’s port.
The plan includes tens of millions of dollars invested in new infrastructure, resulting in a new internal pedestal that will reduce in-terminal truck times for truck drivers making more than one move.
Gate hours have been extended from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., with interchange service during lunch hours. Meetings with gate operators have improved terminal turn times by 20 percent. Average daily transactions have increased from 3,900 to 4,800.
The Georgia Ports Authority has also hired 100 new field service employees, and augmented its port police by 30 percent.
