P&O NEDLLOYD ADDS SHIP TRACKING TO WEB SITE

P&O Nedlloyd, the Anglo-Dutch container shipping line, has added a ship-tracking tool to its Internet Web site at http://www.ponl.com .

The new feature enables users to locate both owned and chartered ships worldwide, and also displays the vessels’ recent movements over several days. Details are updated daily at around 12:00 GMT.

For customers with cargo on the carrier’s vessels, the ship-tracking system will be a graphic version of P&O Nedlloyd’s existing vessel tracking product.

P&O Nedlloyd said it has already had the ship-tracking feature on its corporate intranet since 2000, when the company’s fleet management division was looking for a better method of tracking its ships.

“We also recognized the value of being able to track our ships on demand in these days of heightened security,” said Capt. Stephen Bligh, fleet marine manager. “With authorized access, we are able to poll a vessel at any time to confirm its position, course and speed.”

P&O Nedlloyd said it is the first global container carrier to provide open Internet access to the Purplefinder product, a Web-based application provided by Pole Star Space Applications Ltd.
