Delta sells 11 planes to cargo operator ABX

ABX Air said it will purchase 11 Boeing 767-200 widebody passenger jets from Delta Air Lines during the next three years to expand its cargo capacity and attract more customers.

Wilmington, Ohio-based ABX said it will pay about $190 million for the planes through a combination of cash and borrowing, and convert the aircraft to freighters.

ABX is the former airline of Airborne Express that was spun off as a separate company in 2003 to comply with foreign ownership rules for airlines following the acquisition of Airborne by DHL and its German parent, Deutsche Post. ABX is one of two airlines DHL relies on for overnight air deliveries in North America.

In July, ABX bought and took delivery of one 767-200 from Delta.

A large portion of ABX’s 116 aircraft are narrow-body planes, such as the Boeing 727.
