Maryland officials assess cause of truck crash

Authorities are looking into the possibility that the road tanker that crashed on I-95 in Maryland after falling off an overpass Tuesday afternoon may have lost control after its load of gasoline shifted, the Associated Press reported.

The crash caused a huge inferno that shut down traffic for hours. Also involved in the accident were a dry van tractor trailer, a flatbed truck and a couple of passenger vehicles. An official at Phoenix-based Swift Transportation Co., one of the largest truckload carriers in the nation, told AP that the company believed one its drivers died in the collision. He said the truck was carrying retail merchandise.

As for the road infrastructure, state transportation officials said the roadbed and the bridge at the site of the crash, six miles south of Baltimore, escaped relatively undamaged from the flames.
