Houston celebrates ship channel expansion
The Port of Houston Thursday held ceremonies celebrating the completion of it ship channel expansion project.
Numerous federal, state, and local officials were on hand to mark the deepening of the ship channel from 40 feet to 45 feet. The channel was also widened from 400 feet to 530 feet. The improvements allow easier access to port terminals for the larger containerships and other large vessels deployed in today's shipping markets, port officials said.
The project also included environmental mitigation work leading to what port officials described as the largest wetland creation effort of its kind in the nation.
