A decadeÆs worth of scrapping in 2009

About 200 containerships, for a total capacity of 370,000 TEUs, were scrapped in 2009. That's about the same amount of capacity scrapped during the decade, Alphaliner reported in its newsletter this week.

Alphaliner also noted the average age of ships at time of demolition fell from 30 years in 2005-2008 to 27 years in 2009.

Also notable, Alphaliner said the first post-Panamax containership, the Hyundai Admiral with capacity of 4,651 TEU, was scrapped at the age of 17 years by Zodiac Maritime.
