Rotterdam builds feeder container terminal
The port of Rotterdam will build a dedicated barge and feeder terminal with an annual capacity of about 900,000 TEUs.
The Port of Rotterdam and terminal operator ECT have reached an agreement in principle to construct the “Delta Barge Feeder Terminal” at Maasvlakte. It will handle inland river barges and feeder vessels.
The planned 145-million-euro ($188 million) facility will occupy about seven hectares (17 acres) and have a quay with a length of 800 meters (2,625 feet) and a depth of almost 11 meters (36 feet). A third of the investment will go into quay construction and other basic infrastructures. The new terminal could be in operation by the beginning of 2008, the port of Rotterdam said.
It has become necessary to build a barge and feeder terminal because “now volumes soar so much that the quays have to be used longer by deep-sea vessels,” the port of Rotterdam said in a statement.
