U.S. MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND RECEIVES FIFTH RO/RO/VESSEL
The U.S. Military Sealift Command received its fifth new roll-on/roll-off
vessel Saturday at the Litton-Avondale Industries shipyard in New Orleans.
The Military Sealift Command will crew the vessel, the Pililaau (T-AKR 304),
with U.S. civilian mariners. The command, a component of the U.S. Transportation Command,
provides ocean freight transportation to the Defense Department and military services.
The new vessel, a large, medium speed ro/ro of the Bob Hope class, has six
decks with a capacity of about 390,000 square feet. It’s ideal for transporting
helicopters, tanks and other wheeled military vehicles.
