Ro-Ro vessel sinks in Caribbean

The Miami office of the U.S. Coast Guard reported that one seafarer died and another was missing after a Panamanian-flagged car-carrying freighter sank Friday night 100 miles off the coast of Colombia.

The Coast Guard said the 495-foot vessel Dayana requested assistance just before 7 p.m. and the Panamanian government notified the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin arrived on the scene at approximately 9 p.m. The crew of the Gallatin saved four crew members from the Dayana and recovered one body at the scene.

The Coast Guard said other 'Good Samaritan' vessels were also at the scene, and the motor vessels Patagonia, Osprey I and the tanker Stolt Creativity assisted in saving nine others from the 15-member crew.

The Gallatin is home ported in Charleston and is under the supervision of the Miami-based Seventh Coast Guard District.
