Charleston port to make full switch to ultra-low sulfur diesel
The Port of Charleston said it will use ultra-low sulfur diesel exclusively at its facilities by September to reduce pollution emissions.
The South Carolina State Ports Authority said the decision by it and seven companies that use fuel on the terminals to power on-terminal cranes, lifting equipment, buses, trucks, refrigerated container generators and other engines means particulate matter emissions from affected equipment will be reduced 10 percent and come into compliance with an Environmental Protection Agency regulation that mandates all off-road equipment switch to the low sulfur fuel by 2010.
Traditional low-sulfur diesel meets a standard of 500 parts per million (ppm) sulfur content, while the ultra-low sulfur fuel used on SCSPA facilities must meet a standard of 15 ppm.
