Workers’ unions, port management meet over Cochin public-private plans

Union leaders at the port of Cochin, southern India, have met the management of the Cochin port trust to discuss the development of the “International Container Transshipment Terminal” and the transfer of the Rajiv Gandhi container terminal to the private sector.

The port trust said that the unions “were not happy” about the government’s insistence on public-private partnership as a pre-condition for funding.

Jacob Thomas, chairman of the Cochin port trust, explained the necessity for the public-private partnership at the meeting. “He assured that the apprehensions expressed by the unions will be kept in view while finalizing the terms of the proposal,” the port trust said in a statement.
