Suicide bombers kill Israeli port workers

Two Palestinian suicide bombers killed eight port workers, two other people as well as themselves on Sunday at the Israeli port of Ashdod.

A spokesman for the Ashdod port authority said that one of the bombs exploded within the port area, close to the port’s fence, and the other went off on the other side of the fence.

The eight port workers were employed by the port authority. Ashdod, located on the Mediterranean coast of Israel near Gaza, is the country’s second-largest port. The bombers were from a Gaza refugee camp, according to Reuters, which also reported that at least 20 people were hurt in the explosions.

The attacks prompted the Israeli authorities to cancel discussions on arranging an Israeli-Palestinian peace summit, according to news reports.
