INDUSTRY EAGER TO EDUCATE NEW CUSTOMS COMMISSIONER

While the Senate considers Robert C. Bonner’s nomination as the Treasury Department’s next Customs commissioner, shipping industry groups are eager to educate him about their concerns.

President Bush announced his nomination of Bonner, a partner with law firm Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher in Los Angeles, on May 30. The industry hopes that the new commissioner will be understanding of trade issues, especially increased funding for Customs’ future computer system, the Automated Commercial Environment.

“For those of you from California who know Bonner, or anyone who may have access to him, this is an excellent time to let him know of the importance of trade community of fully funding the ACE project,” said Jim Clawson in a letter to members of the Joint Industry Group, based in Washington.
