Long Beach signs ?green? MOU with Rotterdam port

Long Beach signs ôgreenö MOU with Rotterdam port

Officials from the ports of Long Beach and Rotterdam have signed an agreement promising to exchange information on environmental programs and technologies.

Under the memorandum of understanding signed Tuesday in Rotterdam, the two ports agree to exchange information on environmental issues such as marine wildlife, air quality, soils and sediments, water quality, sustainability and community engagement.

The agreement was signed by a delegation from the city of Long Beach on a tour of European maritime hubs in England, Germany, France, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Headed by Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster, the delegation also includes Long Beach port commissioners Mario Cordero and Nick Sramek.

Foster, who has been pushing along efforts at the Long Beach port to mitigate local port-generated pollution, led a similar delegation though several Asian countries last year. While on the Asia trip, Foster's delegation signed a similar MOU with Port of Shenzhen terminal operator Yantian International Container Terminals.
