The joint project is, in part, a response to China’s investment in Pakistan.
Press reports say Nitin Gadkari, India’s shipping minister, will travel to Iran Wednesday to sign a memorandum of understanding to develop a port in Chabahar, Iran on the Gulf of Oman.
Reuters says the two countries agreed to develop the port in 2003, but little progress has been made in 12 years because of Western sanctions against Iran.
The renewed interest is seen by many as a response both to the United States’ tentative deal with Iran over its nuclear program and plans by China to spend $46 billion to develop a port in Gwadar, Pakistan and an economic corridor to Kashgar in Xijiang, Western China.
