UP improving Oakland/Newark track in California
Union Pacific Railroad said it will spend $10.1 million this year improving track between Oakland and Newark, Calif.
Crews started January removing and installing 48,500 ties; spreading nearly 24,000 tons of rock ballast to ensure a stable roadbed; and replacing the surfaces at 95 road crossings and 2,400 feet of rail in curves on the line. The work is expected to be finished by mid-July.
These improvements are part of the $1.5 billion Union Pacific is planning to spend in 2006 to maintain its track across its more than 32,400-mile system.
