CHINA WTO ENTRY CLEARED WITH EU DEAL

Government officials from mainland China and Europe have finalized a bilateral deal that clears the way for China’s accession to the World Trade Organization.

The trade agreement was finalized in Brussels by negotiators from each side, headed by European Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy and China’s Trade Minister Shi Guangsheng.

The two sides resolved “outstanding bilateral issues between the EU and China” with a view to China’s accession to the WTO, a spokesman for the European Commission said.

“This is good news for China, for the EU and for the world’s multilateral trading system,” Lamy said. “We will now work together in Geneva to rapidly finalize agreement in the WTO.”

The China/EU agreement follows the China-U.S. agreement on the Chinese accession to the WTO concluded earlier this month.
