Port Everglades to take over airport?
A Broward County commission charged with making recommendations to increase efficiency in county government says the county should consider combining management operations of Port Everglades and the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
While the committee stopped short of a recommendation to put the seaport and airport under common management, the panel said some departments might be merged. According to a report in the Miami Herald, specific areas that might be combined include the legal department, real estate management, and public relations. Altogether, the committee found eight areas where seaport and airport operations could be combined.
The seaport/airport proposal was one of several recommendations from the committee, which looked at all county government structure and operations.
The Broward Management and Efficiency Study Committee has been studying county operations for two years. The group, which includes one county commissioner and is chaired by a former state representative, convenes every six years to study county operations.
