PORT OF MIAMI CONTAINER VOLUMES DIP
The Port of Miami saw container cargo volumes drop 15.5 percent for January, led by a 21.1-percent plunge in exports.
The port handled 72,693 TEUs in January, compared to 86,031 TEUs in January 2001. Exports totaled 34,419 TEUs, down from 43,618 TEUs for the month earlier. Inbound containers slipped 9.8 percent to 38,274 TEUs.
For the first four months of its fiscal year, started Oct. 1, the port handled 307,905 TEUs, down 3.8 percent. Export containers declined 6.6 percent to 147,441 TEUs, while inbound containers were off 1.0 percent to 160,464 TEUs.
In terms of tonnage, the port's volumes were off 2.4 percent, to 2.68 million tons during the October 2001-January 2002 period.
