Bonner praises New Zealand Customs for security measures

Robert C. Bonner, commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, praised the New Zealand Customs Service for its efforts to improve cargo container security.

New Zealand Customs officials recently met with their U.S. counterparts to share what they’re doing both legislatively and operationally to improve the security of ocean containers flowing through their country and to the United States.

“New Zealand is making significant investment to automate their systems and purchase some of the best technology available to screen goods traveling through containerized sea traffic against exploitation by terrorists,” Bonner said in a statement Nov. 28.

“These types of initiatives, when fully implemented, will help ensure the low risk nature of goods coming from New Zealand to the U.S. — and keep New Zealand goods flowing in international commerce in times of heightened security,” Bonner added.
