Port of Miami reopens after ammonia leak
A leaking refrigeration unit that spread ammonia gas briefly closed down the Port of Miami for two hours Friday.
A valve on a container malfunctioned about 8 a.m. Friday, a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesman said. The port reopened after the leak was stopped and a vapor cloud that formed over the area dissipated.
Medical personnel treated five people for exposure to the gas. No serious injuries were reported.
The Coast Guard briefly established security zones around Dodge Island, and stopped vessel traffic in the port of Miami’s North, South and Main channels as well as on the Intra-Coastal Waterway.
