U.S.-to-Asia wastepaper rates to rise

      Shipping lines of the Westbound Transpacific Stabilization Agreement plan to raise freight rates for shipments of wastepaper from the United States to Asia, effective Oct. 15. The carrier agreement has finalized recommendations for an increase of $45 per 40-foot container.

   The WTSA said the increase reflects rising fuel costs since the beginning of the year. While rates for most other transpacific container cargoes are subject to a separate, quarterly adjusted bunker charge that fluctuates with marine fuel prices, wastepaper shipments have historically had base rates that include fuel costs.
