UPS EXPANDS CALIFORNIA HUB TO HANDLE U.S./ASIA PACIFIC GROWTH

UPS said Wednesday it has completed the expansion of its international air hub in Ontario, Calif., which aims to support the express giant's growing export operations between the United States and the Asia Pacific region.

The $44-million expansion boosts the hub's sorting capacity 53 percent to more than 107,000 packages an hour, or about 30 per second. The hub's size expands 35 percent, or by 176,000 square feet, to 676,000 square feet total. The expansion also adds about 200 new jobs, bringing staff at the hub to about 4,000.

Located on 76 acres, the Ontario hub can state 20 jet aircraft and 16 smaller feeder aircraft. An average of 31 flights per day, including 21 cargo jets and 10 feeder aircraft, take off from the facility.

Four of six direct weekly flights flown by UPS to China originate at the Ontario hub, and non-stop U.S./China service has continued to exceed the company's projections.
