UP commences cross-border intermodal service

Union Pacific has launched an intermodal service between Monterrey, Mexico, and Chicago.
UP trains will interchange at Eagle Pass, Texas, and Ferromex will carry the goods, which UP suspects will consist mostly of consumer and manufactured cargo, in Mexico to Monterrey.
UP and Ferromex officials said they had made “significant” investments in equipment, terminals and track.
“Union Pacific’s network provides a competitive advantage to companies importing and exporting with Mexico, and recent investments made across our network are providing safe and efficient transportation that helps the bottom line for our current and future customers,” UP’s Bernardo Ayala said in a statement.
UP’s move follows a dedication among companies to improve cross-border intermodal service. In November, Schneider National switched the interchange for its cross-border service from Houston to Jackson, Miss., to allow for faster service.
