The parcel and logistics giant will spend about $185 million to construct a package sorting and delivery facility at DP World’s logistics park adjacent to the London Gateway seaport, according to a statement from the company.
UPS will spend about 120 million pounds ($185.6 million) to build a new 32,000-square-meter (344,445 sq. ft.) package sorting and delivery facility at the DP World London Gateway logistics site in southeast of England, adjacent to its container terminal near the mouth of the Thames River.
“The facility, expected to be completed in the summer of 2017, will act
as a UK hub and distribution center for the local area as well as a key
gateway to UPS’s global transportation network,” the company said. “Once completed, the
facility will be able to process approximately 30,000 packages per hour,
with room for further expansion.”
It was not immediately clear if the facility will process shipments moving through the adjacent DP World container terminal. The new facility will be one of UPS’s largest infrastructure investments outside of the United States in the history of the company.
Luis Arriaga, UPS’s managing director for UK, Ireland & Nordics, said the project “is part of our nearly $2 billion in infrastructure investments across Europe over the next five years.”
Ahmed bin Sulayem, chairman of DP World said the hub will also provide distribution solutions to other logistics park occupiers.
