Seaboard Marine ship first into Haiti
A ship operated by Miami-based Seaboard Marine called at Port-au-Prince, Haiti, March 6, marking the resumption of the carrier’s U.S./Haiti service. Seaboard said it is the first shipping line to resume calls since the ports in Haiti were closed due to civil unrest.
The “Falderntor” was scheduled to make a port call in Haiti March 5 “at the request of many customers anxious to receive and ship goods,” Seaboard said. The vessel arrived on time, but entrance to the port was postponed until March 6 because of safety concerns in the port area.
Twenty-six loads of finished apparel goods were then loaded on the ship, destined for the United States, said Seaboard.
“The Seaboard Marine office (in Haiti) has been unaffected by the unrest and is ready and willing to handle customer requests,” said Bernard Theard, Seaboard’s island manager. However, Seaboard warned conditions in Haiti remain unstable and short delays are expected.
Seaboard ships from Miami; Chester, Pa.; Trinidad; and Kingston to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with three weekly calls.
