NYK to build double-hull VLCC
Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line, the Tokyo-based ocean carrier, said Thursday it will build a 300,000-dwt, double-hull large-size crude oil tanker (VLCC).
The width between the outside hull and the inner wall of the vessel’s fuel tanks will be two meters, the same as for its cargo tanks.
The ship will be built by IHI Marine United Inc., for delivery in December 2005. It will operate under a long-term contract with Kyushu Oil Corp.
NYK has eight new VLCCs on order, the first being completed in June. IHI Marine United, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Universal Shipbuilding Corp. and Imabari Shipbuilding will each build two of the eight ships.
