USDA TO RESUME SEARCH FOR ASIAN LONGHORNED BEETLE

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said Wednesday it would resume tree surveys this summer to search for Asian longhorned beetle infestations.

The USDA will continue the surveys within quarantined areas of New York City, Long Island, Chicago and several Chicago suburbs to ensure that no signs of ALB infestations are present.

The destructive pests, which bore into healthy hardwood trees and feed on living tree tissue, were discovered in New York in 1996 and Chicago in 1998. The discovery led to the destruction of more than 5,000 trees in and around New York City and about 1,400 trees in Chicago.

The infestations have led to fumigation requirements in the United State, Canada and Asia.
