RIDGE WINS UNANIMOUS APPROVAL

   The Senate confirmed Tom Ridge as the first secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, two days before the new institution officially begins work. The vote was 94-0.

   Ridge will be responsible for melding 22 agencies and about 180,000 employees into a department tasked with protecting the nation’s borders, transportation system, public health and infrastructure from terrorist attack.
