PORT OF MANZANILLO EXPANDS
The container port of Manzanillo, on the Pacific coast of Mexico, will be expanded by adding 500 meters of waterfront and 24 acres of yard.
Grupo TMM said that it has received approval from the Secretary of Communication and Transportation on Mexico for its joint venture, TMM Ports and Terminal Operations, to carry out the expansion program.
The expanded yard and berth positions will allow TMM Ports and Terminals to substantially grow the Manzanillo container facility in the coming years, TMM said. The Mexican group said that Manzanillo would expand “not only as a port of entry into Mexico and the United States, but also to serve as a transload Pacific hub center for feeder ships to and from North America, South America and for transcanal movements.”
Javier Segovia, president of Grupo TMM, said that the group’s port operations “have consistently been Grupo TMM’s highest-margin business.”
Grupo TMM is a separate company from TMM Lines, now owned by CP Ships.
