Operations at the Port of Chittagong remained suspended as of 3:00 p.m. local time Tuesday, but flight operations at Chittagong’s Shah Amnat International Airport have resumed, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
Tropical Cyclone Mora made landfall along the southeast coast of Bangladesh south of Chittagong Tuesday morning, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Mora was the equivalent of a category 1 hurricane when touched down in Bangladesh, Weather.com Meteorologist Chris Dolce said. Although the system is now headed inland, the heavy rain that will continue could result in flooding and mudslides in Bangladesh, northeast India and western Myanmar, Dolce said.
At least seven people have been killed in Cox’s Bazar and Rangamati districts as a direct result of the storm, the United News of Bangladesh reported.
The loading and unloading of goods at the Port of Mongla, which was suspended Monday, resumed at around 3:00 p.m. local time Tuesday, according to Mongla Port Authority Chairman Navy Commodore AKM Faruk Hasan.
Flight operations at Chittagong’s Shah Amnat International Airport resumed at 2:00 p.m. local time Tuesday after being shut down at 5:45 a.m. earlier that day, the Dhaka Tribune said. Meanwhile, operations at the Port of Chittagong remained suspended as of 3:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
Omar Faruk, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority, told the Dhaka Tribune that all operations would resume as soon as the weather returned to normal.
The Port of Chittagong has strong ties with various Asian ports. It is called by 15 services that strictly serve trade between Asia and the Indian subcontinent, in addition to multiple intra-Indian subcontinent loops, according to ocean carrier schedule and capacity database BlueWater Reporting’s Port Dashboard tool.
