CARGO ON PASSENGER FLIGHTS COULD FACE FURTHER RESTRICTIONS

Jane Garvey, administrator for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, said on Wednesday that additional restrictions may be placed on cargo aboard passenger planes.

When asked if there should be a ban on cargo in passenger planes, Garvey said, “as we move ahead in the days and weeks, some of these measures may become more stringent.”

Garvey, speaking at a press conference in Washington, also said there will be more steps taken to enhance security at cargo airports and on all-cargo planes in the future, in addition to those already in place for all planes.

Garvey said the “known shipper” rule, an FAA security directive issued after the crash of TWA Flight 800, was a sufficient security measure. Under the known shipper rule, forwarders may do business only with companies with which they've frequently served.

“I think what we have in place now – -that is, dealing with the ‘known shippers,’ is the right step to take,” she said.
