HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE APPROVES AIR-CARGO SECURITY ENHANCEMENTS BILL

HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE APPROVES AIR-CARGO SECURITY ENHANCEMENTS BILL

The House Aviation Subcommittee unanimously approved legislation Wednesday that creates a cargo security program and allows trained cargo pilots to carry handguns in the cockpit.

In addition to the enhanced cargo security aspects, the Aviation Security Technical Corrections and Improvement Act makes corrections to existing law to reflect the Transportation Security Administration’s move from the Transportation Department to the newly formed Homeland Security Department.

“By improving the screening methods and technology used at airports and allowing qualified cargo pilots to defend their planes against terrorism, the bill will improve both commercial and cargo aviation security,” said House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee chairman Don Young, R-Alaska.
